Species Great Crested Grebe - Podiceps cristatus

Comment This great trip started out with the intention of taking full frame photos of the Great Crested Grebe. Clement, Ramesh and I never imagined we would get such great images. Jayesh Patel our guide had informed us the previous week that a pair of Great Crested Grebes were raising their chick in a tank. This pair was one of the last ones remaining before they migrated.Jayesh took us to scout out the place. We could see that the grebes were very shy and would come out from behind the reeds, but would turn back when they spied on us. We decided to come back the next day and take a chance at photographing the birds. The next day we were at the place at 6.00 am. We spread some news papers on the wed ground and lay on it with our 500mm lenses placed between the reeds, almost touchung the water. We were on our stomachs waiting for the grebes to show up. The grebes would some from around the reeds look around and see something has changed between the reeds and go back! This kept happening for about 2 hours. finally around 8.30 am the male grebe took courage and started to feed on the small fishes on the side where we were lying patiently. We could not believe our eyes when suddenly the male grebe dived into the water and appeared about 25 feet in front of us and started feeding on fish! We were stunned as was Jayesh! We had a surreal moment where we had connected with the Great Crested Grebe and clicked some great photos.
